Fugro provides positioning for Fiber-Optic Cable Route in GOM
September 14, 1999
Fugro companies John E. Chance & Associates and Fugro GeoServices are providing surveying for the first fiber-optic installation in the Gulf of Mexico.
Chance is providing precise positioning support for the laying and burying of cable to Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). SAIC was contracted by PetroCom, Inc. to complete the initial underwater survey, provide system design, supervise the permitting process, and supervise the installation.
Utilizing its proprietary Gulf of Mexico data base, Chance did preliminary research for the location of structures and potential hazards. Fugro GeoServices, a specialist in providing integrated geotechnical/geophysical studies, also assisted SAIC in planning the cable route by conducting a geophysical hazard survey for numerous segments of the route.
The fiber-optic telecommunication, called FiberWeb (SM), a 750-mile subsea network, is intended to support offshore oil and gas operators. It will connect several offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico to terrestrial telecommunication systems in Texas and Louisiana by the end of 1999.
Fugro is an independent multi-national group of consulting engineers with over 200 offices in more than 45 countries.
