Geohazards survey firm Fugro GeoServices, Inc. (FGSI - Lafayette, LA) recently renewed a contract to conduct surveys for an "underwater haven" project called the Louisiana Artificial Reef Program.

The Program is directed by the LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and was created in 1986. The program takes abandoned oil rigs and recycles them for use in designated areas in the Gulf of Mexico to form artificial coral reefs.

FGSI has participated in the program for over five years. Technology such as sidescan sonars are used to map the location of the "dumped" oil rigs by coordinates. The positions of the rigs are mapped and water depth is documented.

Once collected, the high-resolution geophysical data is transferred to Fugro Chance’s GIS data base which is the most comprehensive source of wells, pipelines, and hazards found in the Gulf of Mexico. The proprietary data base is used to assist clients to plan projects as well as providing information to field crews to avoid delays and assure safe operations.
